Preparing for Purple and the classics in Essen

January 20, 2009

On February 3 Jon Lord will perform The Concerto for Group and Orchestra in Essen, Germany.

- When we did it in Hagen last February we were going do one night but so many people were interested that we had to do two nights. We got standing ovations.

- In the second half I play a couple of Deep Purple numbers that I have arranged for the orchestra as well as my own solo stuff, too. The concert itself is like a little journey from yesterday to today, if you like – a musical journey. Sometimes I also play with what I call local heroes. It’s always great to go to a town and play with some of the local drummers, bass players and guitar players, who want to play this.

Going back to Grugahalle

January 10, 2009

Jon Lord is gearing up for his concert in Essen, Germany on February 3 – in the Grugahalle, where he used to perform with both Deep and Whitesnake.

- We played several times in the Grugahalle in Essen. I think one of the first big concerts that Deep Purple played when we started to get well known in 1969/1970 in Germany was probably in the Grugahalle. I played there with Whitesnake when I was with that band in the late 1970s/early 1980s and then with Deep Purple again.

- It will be fun to go back to this place with an orchestra, says Jon Lord.

For the February 3 concert, Jon Lord will perform the Concerto for Group and Orchestra and assorted solo pieces together with the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra and band incl. Steve Balsamo (vocals) and Kasia Laska (vocals).

Mark 3 reunion: Hot air and wild speculations

January 6, 2009

concrete wall img_0479wJon Lord comments on press rumours that Deep Purple Mark 3 will reunite and tour with Metallica’s Lars Ulrich on drums:

It all seems like a lot of hot air and wild speculation to me.

I like Lars and what he has achieved with Metallica. He’s obviously always been very complementary in his comments about DP, and I love the story of his famous nine-years-old “baptism of fire” at our ’73 concert in The KB Halle in Copenhagen, but if I was asked to be involved in a “Mark III” reunion – (which, by the way, I haven’t. All I ever said was that the idea had a few good points and a few not-so-good points.) – and I indeed considered that offer, I would not be able to even imagine it without the presence of Ian Paice.

By the way – I have NOT retired!

Love, and as peaceful a new year as possible, to all of you.

Jon

On a side note Deep Purple’s Stormbringer album has been remastered and will be released with bonus tracks in February. Available in the new Jon Lord Music Shop.
