German tribute concert to Jon Lord

Bergheim 2014 banner

On May 23 a new tribute concert to Jon Lord takes the stage in Bergheim, near Cologne, Germany.

Part of the band and orchestra will be keyboard player Martin Doepke, who played with Jon on his Pictured Within Tour in 1999.

Doepke explains:

Organizer is Schobbe Vois of the BM Cultura had the idea of celebrating one of rock music greatest instrumentalists and creative minds.

We met, and plans were made and the lineup was settled, among them the fantastic percussionist Mario Argandona, who introduced Martin to Jon as well as the hard rocking members of the german metal band Rage, featuring Victor Smolski, Peavy Wagner and André Hilgers.

A second drummer, one more guitar player and MD on keys build up the backing band for four different singers and the wonderful NuMetal Symphony with 40 musicians on stage.

A wide range of songs and pieces will be played, starting with Deep Purple‘s first hit Hush, followed by Wring that Neck, Child in Time, Highway Star and on to Any Fule Kno that from Abandon, the final Purple album with Jon.

A couple of Sarabande tracks as well as the gorgeous Pictured Within and Wait a While will complete the evening along with the bluesy Green Onions.

Arrangements have been written specially for this event and have been supplied through jonlord.org by conductor Paul Mann, who made it all possible.

This evening means a real challenge for everybody involved, but also a great honour to dedicate it to the one and only Jon Lord, who left us much too early.

His music has influenced many of us and will stay with us for a lifetime.

Thank you Jon

Martin Doepke
