Review: Concerto for Group and Orchestra (2012)

September 7, 2012

Exclusive review by Vincent Budd for JonLord.org. Previously, Vincent wrote ’The Gemini Man: an Introduction to the Orchestral Works of Jon Lord’ published in 2003.

This studio account of the Concerto for Group and Orchestra is Jon’s final statement of his prized composition.  It is a glittering new take on his glorious opus and, for those of us who have taken the work to our hearts, we have here another superlative version to cherish. It is a deeply moving experience made even more affecting by the composer’s passing.

Video: Paul Mann’s Concerto interview

September 5, 2012

Exclusively for JonLord.org, here is conductor Paul Mann‘s tale of Concerto for Group and Orchestra.

In this 45-minute in-depth interview, Paul Mann takes us through the process of recording the Concerto in Liverpool and at Abbey Road Studios in 2011 and 2012.

He recounts the emotional day when Jon recorded his organ solo for the album; of working with all the guests on the album; and he also talks of the impact Jon’s Concerto had on his childhood years and how it helped shape his decision to become a conductor.

The interview was filmed on July 11, five days before Jon passed away.

Pre-order the standard CD edition and the digipack CD+DVD-audio edition (which includes a 5.1 mix of the Concerto). These will be released on September 28.

– I want it to sound absolutely spot on!

September 4, 2012

In this previously unheard March 2011 interview, Jon Lord speaks enthusiastically of his plans for the new studio recording of Concerto for Group and Orchestra, that is coming out at the end of this month.

He explains his thoughts behind using different players across the movements, and how years of honing the score coupled with modern studio technology would now allow him to produce the most perfect recording of the Concerto possible.

– I’ve worked so hard on the score that it’s now in as good a state as it can possibly be in, and therefore I would like to have it recorded, so it can go down in posterity. I’ll do it with a hugely respected orchestra and with Paul Mann, who knows it inside out. There couldn’t be a better conductor for a studio recording of the Concerto.

New Concerto recording set for September 28

August 26, 2012

On September 28, earMUSIC, releases the first studio recording of Jon’s Concerto For Group And Orchestra, the label writes in a new press release.

– Over these last years since leaving Deep Purple, I’ve played it over 30 times with different orchestras and conductors all over the world, and, of course, in 2000 I did it well over 30 times with Purple on the Concerto tour, so I’ve been honing the piece live on stage, and I’ve had the opportunity to change things in the score that weren’t sounding quite right. It is therefore a marvellous and exciting prospect to have the definitive recording of the definitive version of the score, said Jon Lord in May 2012.

Happily, Jon got to hear and approve the final mixes a few weeks before he passed away on July 16.
