Jon Lord Blues Project: Rottweil, Alte Stadthalle, International Jazz Festival, Germany – May 14 2011

Review by Bo Olsson

It must be hard to be Jon Lord, because everything that you do is expected to be better than what anyone else does. And everything should be wonderful, magical and world-class. But you know what? When it comes to Mr Lord it always is. The Maestro has done it again…

Rottweil on May 14 was an evening of pure genius that gave us more than we could have asked for. The music was a great mix and the musicians, well what can I say? The Maestro as always a delight to see. Delivering amazing solos and music from that Hammond and he was also fast to spread the credit to the rest of the band.

Roth: Not Lazy at all…

April 13, 2011

Last Thursday (April 7) saw the first 2011 show by Jon Lord Blues Project. Ralph Pondman was in Roth, Germany and sends this report:

“Eight o’clock, lights go out, crowd starts to cheer, band comes on stage. I know that we are going to be treated to some blues – and for me this is the first time I’m going to see the Jon Lord Blues Project live. I have seen and heard some snippets from Lahnstein 2010 and was impressed with what I heard. After tonight I know that this setup works great and is treat to see live.

Explains conductor Knut Hartmann:

– We are very, very, very happy to have been able to study the Concerto for Group and Orchestra by Jon Lord. Our young people love this opus, even if it is for a young orchestra very difficult to play.

Jon Lord gets bluesy in Germany

December 17, 2010

On April 7 2011, Jon Lord will appear at the 20th Rother Bluestage, a blues festival in the town of Roth near Nürnberg.

Nicknamed the Blusual Suspects, the band will also feature Miller Anderson (guitar, vocals), Maggie Bell (vocals), Zoot Money (keyboards), Colin Hodgkinson (bass) and Pete York (drums). Ticket buyers should expect plenty of Hammond in a set of golden bluesrock classics.

The project has elements of the old Apollo Theatre in Harlem Rhythm and Blues Revues of the early 50s, and the procession of solo singers and instrumentalists keeps it interesting and fascinating.

In 1982, Jon Lord toured Germany with the Rock and Blues Circus featuring himself, Hodgkinson, York, Chris Farlowe and others, while in the UK another line-up  with Farlowe, Brian Auger, Hodgkinson, Spencer Davis and York went out under the name of Blues Reunion. Read the rest of this entry ?
